Barb City Manor is a not-for-profit retirement community for seniors 62 and over.
We offer affordable studio and one-bedroom apartments. Our apartments do not have kitchens, but we do the cooking for you! Our apartments are unfurnished and we encourage you to make your apartment your home with things you enjoy.
There is no entry fee to move into Barb City Manor. A security deposit of one month’s rent is required at move-in. The security deposit is returned to the resident if 30 days’ notice is given prior to ending the lease.
Our monthly rent includes: 3 meals a day, 3 extra meal tickets for residents to use for guests, weekly housekeeping and linen service, water, electricity, gas, refuse disposal, and staff on duty 24 hours a day. Other amenities include a beauty shop, resale and gift shop, and a wide variety of activities.
There is an additional fee for the second person to cover the cost of meals and utilities.
Barb City Manor rents on a month to month basis, so there is no lease. There is an Agreement Covering Residency that describes the responsibilities of Barb City Manor and the requirements for residents to be able to live here.
We are a private independent living community, so residents are responsible for paying the monthly fees. Our services are not covered by Medicaid, but rent assistance is available through the DeKalb County Housing Authority and the Veterans Commission of DeKalb County for those who meet eligibility guidelines.
No, you remain in control of your finances.
BCM is not an assisted living facility or a nursing home. It is an independent living retirement community providing meals, housekeeping service, and staff on duty 24 hours a day. We offer a variety of social, recreational, and educational programs as well. Residents can contract with local agencies for homecare services as needed.
We do not have nurses or personal care workers on staff, but there are help buttons in each apartment and staff on duty 24 hours per day to help with emergencies. Residents needing personal care or home medical services can contract with any service provider for caregivers, therapy, nursing, or other services as needed.
BCM does not provide transportation to residents. Door-to-door ride service is available through TransVac. BCM coordinates monthly outings to Wal-Mart and trips to local favorites such as: Ollie’s Custard Stand, Fourth of July in Hopkins Park, local orchards, the Sycamore Pumpkinfest display, Christmas light tours, and more!
Yes. We have reserved parking spaces for our residents for no charge. Carports are available for a monthly fee on a first come, first served basis.
Pets are not allowed to live at Barb City Manor, but we encourage pet visitors. We coordinate monthly pet therapy visits with Tails Humane Society.
The City of DeKalb fire code prohibits the use of microwaves and cooking appliances in resident apartments except for Keurig-type coffee makers. There are microwaves, coffee makers, and refrigerators on each resident floor in the laundry rooms. Residents can have a dorm-type refrigerator in their apartments.
Barb City Manor provides the sheets and towels for residents and the housekeepers launder the linens each week. Residents are responsible for their personal laundry. Washers and dryers are available free of charge on each of the resident floors.
Residents can have electric wheelchairs and scooters. Scooters cannot be taken into the dining room due to their size. The dining room can accommodate electric wheelchairs.
